Poussières
Astonished, horror-stricken, my eyes riveted to the television screen, the scene I was witnessing seemed unreal. The images of the two colossal towers as they collapsed triggered intense fear in me. The heavy and imposing concrete of the two one-hundred-and-ten-story skyscrapers was instantly transformed into a fine light powder. Mixed with the volatile fumes of the fires, this cloud of dust hovering above the city will be forever etched in my mind. In the ten seconds that it took to create , my life was changed. Inevitably, that cloud became the symbol of a historic transformation.
Now, there is the time before September 11th and the time after.
The underpinnings of my exhibition took root in the need to bear witness to this new reality. The outrageousness of the attacks reflects the extreme practices and the quest that continues to fuel the excessiveness of our actions. The dust in my work is a visual representation of the drama that has just played out - an allegory that illustrates a new and deep scar on our timeline. In my mind's eye, these clouds of debris are traces of memories that indelibly mark the times in which we live. My intention is to use the power of this symbol and integrate it into different compositions to express my concerns.
For me, the fear of danger will remain the most significant consequence of these horrible events. The confidence and peace that we enjoyed until then, thoughtlessly taken for granted, are now utopian ideals of a bygone era.
